The sign language is the transfer of thoughts and speeches with hand gestures and face movements to another person. This language has been developed for people who lost their linguistic and auditory ability at birth or then. It is estimated that there are 3 million impaired people in hearing in our country, even if any clear numbers are not given.

In Turkey, the development of sign language, began with the School of the Deaf and Dumb which was opened Sultan Abdul Hamid era in 1889. Then the school, which was closed in 1913, was moved to Izmir with the establishment of the Turkish Republic and reopened. "Gestuno", known as the international sign language, was first discussed in 1951 at the World Federation for the Deaf. Gestuno was efforted to be standardized for the whole world in 1973 and necessary steps were taken in this direction.

The sign language differs by country to country. It is called sign language translation by bringing together people who use two different languages and speak with sign language by means of a translator, just like the translation which was established by speaking. Although there is a misbelief that a common sign language is used all over the world, the necessary steps taken in this regard unfortunately didn't reach its goal.
