Azerbaijani is a language which is spoken by 24 - 30 million people worldwide. Contrary to what is commonly believed, the language which is spoken in the region from Russia to Iraq is not mostly spoken in Azerbaijan. In fact, Iran, in which 12 million Azerbaijanis live, is the most Azerbaijani language spoken country. The relationships between Turkey and Azerbaijan continues in economic, military and political areas. Azerbaijan, which left the  Russian Federation in 1991, constructed a close relationship with Turkey thanks to consanguinity ties. In 9 November 1991, Turkey has been the first country to recognise the independence of Azerbaijan. The bilateral relationships were advanced positively during the Ebulfez Elçibey era and also during the successor Haydar Aliyev era and  these good relationships have been constantly developed since then. İlham Aliyev, who is the son of Haydar Aliyev and is selected as President after his father, continued to maintain close relationships with Turkey. Turkey and Azerbaijan perceive themselves as brother countries which come from the same roots.

Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan; a country famous for its underground resources. Today, the oil of Baku flows through Turkey towards the West. Thanks to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, the two countries have taken the path of energy partnership. Thus, Azerbaijan had the opportunity to introduce their oil to the western countries.

Also in the military field, Turkey conveyed its experiences in the training of the Azerbaijani Army, sent its lecturers to military schools and trained Azerbaijani Soldiers in the schools in our country. In the years of 1996 and 1997, Turkey and Azerbaijan put signatures to cooperation agreements on the military level.
